Amman Design Week 2019

Amman Design Week (ADW) is an immersive experience in local and regional culture and design in Jordan, under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah. Focused on creating a forum for learning‭, ‬exchange and collaboration‭, ‬this platform empowers designers through its comprehensive‭ ‬program of large-scale curated exhibitions‭, ‬student and community programs‭, ‬workshops‭, ‬talks‭, ‬competitions‭, ‬and cultural events‭. ‬

A collection of my ceramics, entitled ‘Unexpected Rain and New Kinds of Pollen’ was showcased at Amman Design Week, from October 4-12, 2019. This hand-painted collection of ceramics are inspired by the various feelings you may have when traveling alone; when you're caught in the rain without an umbrella in the thick summer air, when you have a playful moment with a strangers' baby on the metro, when you have a language barrier and revert to presumed globally understood hand gestures to communicate.

Pattern Play at the Crafts District

Amman Design Week’s Crafts District is a celebration of the act of making; both traditional and contemporary. Taking place in a new location each year, this pop-up experience combines design installations, exhibitions, shops, and cultural programs that offer craftspeople and makers from across the country a chance to share their ideas and stories.

For ADW 2019’s Craft District, I developed colorful digital textile designs at a booth that allowed visitors to experiment with pattern making with my own handmade stamps. When developing patterns, there is a playfulness that emerges throughout my process, which is what I hoped to capture when developing the concept for this exhibition space. The ‘Pattern Play’ exhibition invited visitors to participate in the process of block printing and pattern design, and to get an interactive piece that developed throughout the week with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
