Faloodeh & Sopapillas is a collection of ceramics inspired by foods found in places I have called home, Dubai and New Mexico.
Ceramics are one of my favorite mediums to work in as they offer a gratifying tangible experience that also teaches patience and humility. When painting ceramics and experimenting with colors and glaze types, there’s always an element of surprise. Certain clays react differently to certain colors and glaze types, so what you end up with might be very different than what you initially intended. This process has taught me as an artist to let go a little bit and to enjoy the process, even if the outcome is not as I expected.
My ceramics are inspired by a sense of whimsy and playfulness; I see them as happy objects that add a sense of character to a space. When asked what inspires me while working on my ceramic collections, I would have to say that I go into an almost transfixed, meditative mode. The process of working on ceramics is very meditative for me, so what comes out is usually a direct reflection of what I was feeling, thinking or experiencing while working, but I cannot pinpoint one exact story or thought that I am trying to relay. All in all, my ceramics are a tangible expression of my creative vision and personality.
